Project 2025: The Right-Wing Wish List for Another Trump Presidency

Project 2025 is a wide-ranging policy plan created by the Heritage Foundation and other right-wing groups. The 900-page document outlines a vision for the next Republican presidency. It touches on many aspects of government and society, proposing big changes to how the country runs.

The plan aims to boost presidential power and push for conservative social policies. It suggests reshaping federal agencies and changing how they work. The document covers topics like family, government structure, national borders, and individual rights.

One key idea is putting more federal agencies under direct White House control. This would let a president make decisions faster in many areas. The plan also wants to make it easier to fire government workers and replace them with political picks.

Project 2025 takes aim at some specific agencies. It calls the FBI “bloated” and “lawless” and wants big changes there. The plan even suggests getting rid of the Department of Education completely.

On social issues, the document has a strong conservative bent. It mentions abortion about 200 times. While not calling for a total ban, it does suggest ways to limit access. The plan wants to stop the use of a common abortion pill and block its delivery by mail.

The document also pushes for what it calls a “biblical” view of marriage and family. It wants government health agencies to use this view in their work.

Immigration is another big focus. Project 2025 calls for more money to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. It also wants to create a larger, more powerful border police force by combining parts of different agencies.

The plan suggests changing how visas work. It wants to cut some visa types and make others cost more. People who can pay extra might get faster service.

On energy, the document takes a strong pro-fossil fuel stance. It wants to cut money for green energy research. Instead, it calls for more oil and gas production. The plan would drop goals to reduce carbon emissions.

Many former Trump officials helped write Project 2025. But Trump himself has said he’s not involved with it. He’s tried to distance himself from the plan as the election gets closer.

Despite this, the document has become a hot topic in the 2024 race. Democrats have attacked it strongly. They’ve even set up a task force to fight against it. They claim there’s a secret part of the plan with a list of executive orders.

The backlash has been intense enough that the project’s first director stepped down. He said he wanted to focus on helping Republicans win the election.

Not all of Project 2025’s ideas have made it into the official Republican Party platform. The party has taken some of the broader themes, like wanting to fire “corrupt” government workers. But it hasn’t adopted all the specific plans.

For example, on abortion, the Republican platform is less detailed. It says abortion laws should be up to states. It also wants to protect some reproductive health services that Project 2025 doesn’t mention.

The immigration parts of the party platform match Project 2025 more closely. Both call for mass deportations and stricter border control.

Think tanks often create policy wish lists like this. They hope to shape what future presidents do. The Heritage Foundation has done this for past Republican administrations too. In fact, they say the Trump White House used many of their ideas from 2016.

But Project 2025 stands out for its size and scope. It goes into great detail on how it wants to change the government. This level of planning has made some people worried and others excited.

The debate over Project 2025 shows the deep divides in American politics right now. It highlights very different views on how the country should be run. As the 2024 election gets closer, we’ll likely hear more about these ideas and the arguments around them.
